YOUR FOLLOWER COUNT IS LYING TO YOU

50K followers means nothing if nobody engages. Brands know it. Fans know it. The algorithm knows it. Engagement rate is the only number that tells you whether your audience is alive or dead.

HIGH ENGAGEMENT + SMALL AUDIENCE = MONEY. LOW ENGAGEMENT + BIG AUDIENCE = NOISE.

ENGAGEMENT RATE BENCHMARKS BY PLATFORM

Industry-standard benchmarks so you know exactly where you stand.

Platform Poor Average Good Excellent
Instagram <1% 1–3% 3–6% >6%
TikTok <3% 3–6% 6–10% >10%
YouTube <1% 1–3% 3–5% >5%
Facebook <0.5% 0.5–1% 1–3% >3%
LinkedIn <1% 1–3% 3–5% >5%

Benchmarks are directional and vary by niche, audience size, and content type. Use them as a reference point, not a hard rule.

QUESTIONS

Engagement rate is total engagements (likes, comments, shares, saves) divided by total followers, multiplied by 100. Some platforms use reach or views instead of followers. This calculator uses the industry-standard follower-based formula for each platform.
On Instagram, 1–3% is average, 3–6% is good, and above 6% is excellent. Smaller accounts (under 10K followers) tend to have higher engagement rates. If you are above 3%, your audience is paying attention and you are ready to monetize.
TikTok engagement rates are higher than other platforms. 3–6% is average, 6–10% is good, and above 10% is excellent. TikTok’s algorithm rewards engagement heavily, so high rates signal strong content-audience fit.
High engagement means your audience actually cares. A creator with 5K followers and 8% engagement will earn more from paid access than someone with 100K followers and 0.5% engagement. Engaged fans pay. Passive followers scroll past.
Absolutely. Brands pay premiums for high engagement. Screenshot your results and include them in your media kit. An engagement rate above the platform average is hard proof that your audience is active and valuable.
Check monthly. Track the trend, not individual posts. A rising engagement rate means your content strategy is working. A declining rate means it is time to experiment. Use this calculator each month to benchmark your progress.
